Over the last several years Dave Sumak head mechanic at AVW has seen too many Volkswagen T5 Transporters with excessive cam wear.

Models manufactured between 2005-2009 with engine codes AXE or BPC are a common sight in his workshop. These vehicles come to AVW as many general workshops are unable to correctly diagnose the faults. Complaints include a lack in power, misfires or erratic idle and in severe cases popping through the intake manifold. Upon inspection it is clear to see worn camshaft lobes and lifters caused by incorrectly specified engine oil. With these vehicles having as little is 140000 km on them Dave would not normally expect to see such dramatic failure. This type of repair requires very specialised tooling to reset timing and injector alignment carried out by specialist like the team at AVW. This type of repair would generally cost around $4500 including parts. As part of AVW’s service recommendation once repairs have been completed we use Top Tec 4200 5W/30 engine oil and the MOS2 additive, over the many years we have completed these repairs and been using Liqui Moly we have never needed to replace a camshaft or lifters in a repaired vehicle, or even better use Liqui Moly from the first service and you won’t need to carry out this repair at all.
